Bakersfield History
Nashville West

Bakersfield is known in country music circle as "Nashville West"

From Los Angeles 110m.
From San Francisco 288m.
From Las Vegas 289m.

Bakersfield Sound was developed in the 1950's. Bakersfield country was a reaction against the slickly-produced, string orchestra-laden Nasville Sound, which was becoming popular in the late 1950's.
buck Owens and the Buckaroos and Merle Haggard and the Strangers are the most successful artists of the original Bakersfield sound era.
The Bakersfield Sound had a large influence on the west coast music scene that many guitar companies set up shop in Bakersfield in the 60's.

Growth Drivers
Lack of choice and outlets for americana music

Two significant research studies were conducted recently to help better understand americana demographics.
The 3,000 listener study by Troy & Evolution research was presented at the americana music association convention in august 2008 in nashville.
3.9% would listen "all the time", 10.2% "most of the time" and 30% would listen "some of the time" if a radio station was available solely focused on americana.
18% own americana music and listen to it often -- 80% of this group would listen at least occasionally to an americana radio station if availabe.
The term "americana" is still unknown with only 1/3 of the sample familiar.
40% of sample would listen "all the time" "most of the time" or "some of the time" to a new FM americana station.
Key findings pointed to lack of listening options and strong affinity for americana. The results vary greatly from region to region.
